Support Irish Craft and Design this Christmas

It’s that time of year again, when we hit the bustling streets and online shops to find that “something special” for our loved ones. But before we get caught up grabbing every single thing on BuzzFeed’s Most Amazing Gifts of 2016, let’s think for a second: how amazing are they, really? Can it bring that special holiday cheer? What else is out there? Well, our very own Irish designers, craftsmen and craftswomen have everyone covered this Christmas!

Irish craft and design is not only beneficial to our economy. The products are made with care and quality, and contain a unique quirkiness that will bring a smile to the face of whoever you manage to get as Kris Kindle this year!

To help you with your Christmas shopping, we’ve made a list – and checked it twice – of stores that stock the best in Irish craft and design gifts!

Retail Outlet – Designist:

If you are looking to get a unique gift for your loved ones, then Designist is the store for you. Not only are the staff incredibly helpful at finding the right present, they are strong supporters of Irish craft and design.

I went to Designist to have a chat with the owner, Jennie Flynn, to find out more about the inspiration behind their store. “Irish Design punches above its weight in terms of Graphic and Product Design. Designist is a link between Product and customer so designers can easily promote their work,” said Jennie.

Designist stock a wide range of Irish products, ranging from soaps, to children’s toys and everything in between. Whether you are buying a gift for him, for her or your work Kris Kindle, I am sure you’ll find what you’re looking for there!

Other craft and design retail spaces in Dublin to keep an eye on this Christmas include:

Market – Craft and Design Fair, RDS:

The National Crafts & Design Fair is Ireland’s biggest fair for the crafts and design industry, with literally tens of thousands of unique, handmade products on offer. It’s an essential day out for anyone on the quest for one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts. The fair runs from the 4th – 8th December and is held in the Main Hall of the RDS. This fair showcases the extraordinary work of more than 500 Irish designers, artists, and craftspeople who will be taking part in the country’s largest celebration of crafts. Many of Ireland’s most respected crafters will be there, showcasing and selling top quality goods. The wide variety of products ranges from handmade chocolates to high fashion clothing. And because the goods are all hand-made, they have an added uniqueness and sense of character that can be lacking in regular commercial products.

There are craft fairs popping up all over Ireland this Christmas. If you are in the area they are worth a visit! These include;

To Wrap It All Up:

This Christmas, take a different route when it comes to buying presents and support our nation’s industry of Craftsmen, Craftswomen and Designers! Put more thought into your gift-giving and get your loved ones something that really shows you care.

In a digital world, we are surrounded by gifts that come and go. There is something really honest about a gift that has been imagined, designed and made in Ireland.
